Ancestry Research and Polish Genealogy

Homo Sapiens, or anatomically modern humans, have lived in Poland for the past 12,000 years, as can be seen by the physical evidence of bones, tools, and other artifacts left behind there. During ancient times, the territory of Poland was ruled by various tribes, including the Celts, Scythians, Balts, Sarmatians, and Polans. There is physical evidence of habitation in cities like Kalisz (3rd century), Poznań (9th century), and Kraków (4th century) prior to the Middle Ages, and later cities like Warsaw played important roles in the development of art, religion, politics, and commerce in the country. Perhaps your ancestors played a part in this fascinating history, and left behind important documentation that connects to your present-day genealogy? To help get you started on this exciting voyage of discovery, we’ve assembled an expert team of genealogists to help you uncover the unique story of your family's journey through time.

Getting Started with Your Research

Records for most parts of Poland can be found in Warsaw at the State Archives of Poland and National Library of Poland, as well as the many regional archives and repositories located throughout the country. Available records for genealogy research include civil registration, church records, tax lists, military records, passports, censuses, and other types of records. The most important records for genealogy research, though, would be civil registration and church records, which would be the primary record types for family history research in Poland. Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths officially began in Poland in 1808, and these records would generally be the best place to start with your Polish genealogy search. After exploring the civil registration records in depth, you would probably get into church parish records, which are sometimes available back to the 1600s or even earlier in Poland.
